Green Hills AEA is one of nine Iowa AEAs that were established by the Iowa Legislature in 1974 to be an effective, efficient and economical means of identifying and serving children, birth to age 21. All AEAs work to ensure that every child receives a free, appropriate, quality education by providing educational equity for all Iowa children with an emphasis on those with diverse learning needs.
The AEAs work as partners to provide educational, special education, and media services to every Iowa public school district and accredited, nonpublic schools to improve the learning outcomes and well-being of all children and youth. Green Hills AEA works with families and providers to identify and address specific family concerns and priorities, as they relate to the child's overall growth and development. In addition, broader family needs and concerns can be addressed by locating other supportive/resources services in the local community for the family and/or child. All services to the child are provided in the child's natural environment including the home and other community settings where the children of the same age without disabilities participate. Green Hills AEA also inspires educators to sustain superior learning outcomes by providing professional tools and learning experiences to support the implementation of evidence-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Green Hills AEA employs approximately 300 employees who serve a 17 county area of 43 public schools and six accredited non-public school districts comprising approximately 38,000 students and 3,000 educators.
Green Hills AEA’s geographic area covers the southwest/south central portion of Iowa. The central office is located near the Council Bluffs/Omaha metropolitan area. Regional offices are nestled in the communities of Avoca, Council Bluffs, Creston, Glenwood, Missouri Valley, Osceola and Red Oak. Recreational and cultural enthusiasts will find an abundance of year-round activities. While residents enjoy the quiet countryside, it is only a short drive to the metropolitan areas of Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; and Des Moines, Iowa, if you want to experience the excitement of city life.
